Merit Water Park consists of 25 acres in Simpson County approximately 4 miles south of D’ Lo on Highway 43. The park is located on Rials Creek and features a small water fall and an old fashioned swimming hole. Park facilities include: parking area, sand and rock creek-side beach and picnic tables. Merit Water Park is operated and maintained by the Simpson County Park Commission.
Rials creek is spring fed and runs cold even in the summer. The photos show the swimming area when the water is a little high, but it still displays a beautiful scenic area that is visited by many people each year.
According to Jim Brieger's book, Home Town Mississippi, the Merit area got its name when it put in a bid for the Simpson County Courthouse and its qualification was just that it could "stand on its own merit." And although they didn't get the courthouse, the name stuck.
Well, Merit Falls can stand on its own merit, too, as a place of peaceful tranquility.
Here are some pictures of Merit Water Park. There are picnic tables and a nice swimming area. The water isn't brown, look closely and you can see the sandy bottom in some of the pictures. Also, look closely at the water fall. This is a very peaceful area if you enjoy hearing the water.
